And If the Surface Tension Breaks

A Drama Mavericks C.I.C. production directed by David Lester

Drama Mavericks is excited to announce auditions for And If the Surface Tension Breaks by David Brady, a new play and an exciting upcoming production for July 2026.

This project continues our commitment to new contemporary theatre and championing new writers, and we’re looking for performers who are excited by emotionally truthful, ensemble-led storytelling with imagination, energy and theatrical boldness.

Overview

And If the Surface Tension Breaks by David Brady is a bold and imaginative new contemporary play set in the final moments before the end of the world.

As Charlie is propelled through a series of liminal spaces after an extinction-level event, the play explores memory, fear, loss, identity and the human need for connection when time is running out. Intimate, emotionally charged and theatrically fluid, it offers performers the chance to create a striking ensemble world through shifting roles, vivid storytelling and a distinctive black-box theatricality. At once darkly funny and deeply moving, it asks what really matters when everything else is about to disappear.

NOW CASTING

Please note: The stage playing ranges below are suggested for this production. India, Tango and Kilo also function at times as a collective presence, ‘KIT’, and may also take on additional theatrical roles and functions within Charlie’s journey.

  • Stage playing range: late 20s to mid 30s

Charlie is the emotional centre of the play: funny, intelligent, defensive and deeply anxious. He carries a lifelong fear of catastrophe, of loss, and of the world ending, and much of the play is driven by his struggle to confront memory, intimacy, grief and missed chances. He uses humour and resistance to protect himself, but underneath that is a raw vulnerability and a constant sense of dread.

This is a demanding role for a performer who can handle direct address, emotional openness, spiralling thought, dark humour and sustained stage presence. Charlie needs warmth and relatability, but also the ability to show someone who has spent a long time running from what hurts him.

  • Stage playing range: mid 20s to mid 30s

India is precise, poised and emotionally incisive. She often speaks in a measured, stylised or slightly artificial register, at times almost like an announcement system or digital assistant, but underneath that control is real emotional force. She often cuts through Charlie’s self-protection with the clearest emotional insight and can shift from detached calm to sharp challenge in an instant.

This role would suit a performer with clarity, control, intelligence and dry wit, who can balance formal precision with emotional intensity.

  • Stage playing range: mid 20s to mid 30s

Kilo is the most immediate, colloquial and disruptive energy in the room. He is funny, provocative, matey and often disarming, but he is also the most likely to push hard, needle Charlie, and force a confrontation. He can flip quickly from comic banter into something far more abrasive and emotionally dangerous, and brings a grounded, restless physicality to the play.

This role needs a performer with strong comic timing, presence, unpredictability and edge, able to move fast between humour, warmth and aggression.

  • Stage playing range: mid 20s to mid 30s

Tango is the most analytical and interpretive of the three. She often frames the action, asks the probing question, introduces context and pushes Charlie to examine meaning rather than avoid it. There is a cerebral quality to her, but not a cold one: she is perceptive, quietly authoritative and often the one trying to make Charlie sit with what he is seeing and feeling.

This is a strong role for a performer with subtle authority, intelligence, composure and emotional depth, who can hold attention without overplaying.

Content note: This play contains strong language and adult themes.
