AUDITIONs – OLIVER TWIST

ThursDAY 4 September - 5pm to 7:30pm

Adapted by Wendi Graham, Directed by Ben Nash

Step into the shadows and resilience of post-war Norwich in this gritty, intimate reimagining of Oliver Twist. Set in 1948, this bold new adaptation traces Oliver and the Artful Dodger’s journey through a fractured world—where danger and kindness walk hand-in-hand. Amid bombed-out streets and fading loyalties, they search for survival, identity, and connection.

This production is suitable for all audiences and features a young adult cast.

8 principal roles + 8 ensemble roles, with movement and multi-rolling throughout.

  • Thursday 4th September5:00 PM to 7:30 PM at St Mary Magdalene Church Hall, Norwich

  • First Read-Through: Wednesday 24th September

    Principal Roles (8 roles total):

    1. Oliver (Playing age: 16–18)

Vulnerable, instinctively good-hearted, but shaped by a harsh world. Searching for belonging amidst chaos. Needs strong emotional and physical presence.

    2. Dodger (Playing age: 16–18)

Streetwise, quick, and fiercely loyal. A survivor who masks trauma with charm. Agile, dynamic role with movement work.

    3. Bill Sikes (20s–30s)

Intimidating and volatile. A violent man shaped by post-war brutality. Dominates through fear. Needs intense stage presence.

    4. Nancy (20s–30s)

Strong, spirited, and deeply conflicted. Torn between love, survival, and morality. One of the emotional anchors of the play.

    5. Fagin (30s–60s)

Mysterious and manipulative, yet oddly fatherly. A morally grey character who walks the line between protector and exploiter.

    6. Dual role: Oliver’s Mum (20s–30s) / Oliver’s Aunt Rose (20s-30s)

Mom: seen in early scenes or flashbacks — gentle, loving, and tragic. Sets the tone for Oliver’s innocence. Small but pivotal role; Rose: Sister to Oliver’s mother. Tough, resilient, and key to Oliver’s future. Appears later in the play. Emotionally grounded and caring.

    7. Oliver’s Grandad: (50s–60s)

A man wearied by grief and loss. Distant and emotionally complex. Believes himself a good man.

    8. Oliver’s Uncle (30s–40s)

Practical, hard-edged, spoiled, and hiding secrets from Oliver’s past. Should contrast in energy to Grandad.

    Ensemble Roles (8 performers)

Ensemble will take on multiple characters across the world of the play — from orphans to townsfolk, officials to street sellers.
Strong movement ability, versatility, and collaborative spirit required.
